More then one of my friends got into Askimet and now can’t comment anywhere. How they got there is a mystery. It seems that there are bugs that need to be fixed.

My comments are getting flagged as Askimet spam, so you might not even get this comment. I do not spam, and I always try to contribute to the conversation in the best way that I can. If you happen to see this comment in your dustbin, would you de-spam me, please? If you don’t want to publish the comment, that’s ok. I just want people to de-spam me so maybe Askimet catches on. I would return this favor to anyone.

Use SpamKarma myself, so not very familiar with Akismet. Like all spam filters, thought, it is sopposed to be "intelligent" in that it learns over time. Pearl, considering you explicitly stated in a previous post that trusting yourself was not an option, perhaps Akismet picked up on that bit of information and acted accordingly. @Sid: my comment (not post) had no such words for Akismet to get alarmed :) no, technology can never alone do the job of catching all spam but it can definitely be made to do a better job!

It’s happened to me before too. I spend almost as much time checking my spam folder, as deleting spam files that DIDN’T get caught. We need a better option.

Well your post had some words in that probably set Akishmets filters off. I would repeat them but then this comment would get blocked :>
Dealing with spam will always be a combo of software and human input. Neither one can handle it on their own.

Akismet catches most spam but I like to moderate comments – I can usually tell when a comment is just for a link but sometimes I have to check the link. If I’m not sure I’ll just delete it -if its really spammy, Ill mark it as spam.

Haha! I’ve had that happen before. I actually go through my spam filter every day and resurrect many valid comments that get caught in it. Akismet isn’t perfect but is really a life saver. I am up to 62,000 spam comments in one year :mrgreen:

You know what I hate, every single day I always get a pron comment that manage to get through the spam filter. And I understand once or twice but seriously, on one of my blogs I get at least 5 pron comments that get past the filter DAILY!

This is one annoying thing about WP…

@RennyBA… I’ve always meant to try Spam Karma but never got to download it – will look into it

@Mig… you are a hero and thank you for saving our comments :) of course no software can come close to human mind but still, I couldn’t live without this software as my mind would have exploded by now with the junk it gets out of my way

@Stephen.. that’s what I was thinking too.. Akismet must have been having problems as I searched thru blogs, quite a bit of them have mentioned it lately

@Morgan… it definitely is a waster of time and a lot of times I forget to check it.. I only noticed after my own comment didn’t appear… and they delete spam queue every two weeks, which means if you don’t check it often, you might be losing some good comments.

Being the goof I am, I never used checked the spam queue – oops! What made me start checking was that my comments back to those who commented on my sites, weren’t showing up – just like your situation.
So, I need to waste time making sure that both those who comment – you, me or whomever – aren’t trapped in “SpamLand”.

Hi Pearl,

Askimet’s always had a name for giving some false positives. A bit of pain if it’s putting the author in there! I find Askimet has been catching more seemingly good comments recently. Maybe it’s having problems.

I check the spam comments every once in a while too, and it does happen to find valid comments lost among spam invaders. I feel like a hero when I “rescue” them.

No anti-spam software is perfect and Akismet often fails to filter spam comments from genuine… This only shows not that software cannot learn, but that nothing can replace the human mind. :)

I use Spam Karma and it has saved me for almost 15 000 spam comments in one year. You always have to check though, some might be good.

Hmm. It has some nerve doing that to you when you were trying to respond to ME! LOL. But that is really weird. I’ve never had it do that to me yet. I see it has happened to JoLynn too. Well, now I know where to check if I lose one of my own comments.

Hi JoLynn.. I just came across Darren’s article about Comment Spam where he talked about all time high spam getting thru the filter so it’s possible something went wrong or it gets ‘confused’ every once in a while..

I was a bit concerned coz some of the spam is starting to look like legitimate comments and unless Akismet adapts quickly, it could become a huge problem.

That’s happened to me before, too. I thought my comments had stopped working again but it turned out my comment went into Akismet – weird but I retrieved it.
