Random Act of Kindness

“All you have shall some day be given;
Therefore give now, that the season of giving
may be yours and not your inheritors.”

Kahlil Gibran

We just got done being thankful for all that we have, ate good delicious meals and celebrated! But when was the last time we thought about giving away some of what we have? Giving, without expecting something in return?

I used to volunteer at breast cancer walks, heart walks and autism walks but haven’t done that in some time now. Life gets in the way and it is easy to forget to do those things that we don’t depend upon for our daily living.

If you need some inspiration to do something of that nature, head over to Zen Habits and read what Leo Babauta has to say. Leo has a way of moving and inspiring you with his down to earth, straight forward, heart felt writings. Many times, I go over to his blog to simply spend a few minutes browsing through different subjects he writes on and pick the one that resonates with my mood that very moment and come away with a sense of rejuvenation and fulfillment.

Today he has a post on his faith in humanity and how he believes each of us can do our own share “to bring out the best in people, to have them help each other” and bring back the warmth and sense of togetherness in this otherwise seemingly falling apart world. Leo has already started the process of paying his random act of kindness forward by offering free copies of his latest Zen to Done eBook. Another part of his act of kindness is that he will link to any site that writes about their own act of kindness in the real world and how they plan to pay it forward.

I thank Leo for the inspiration and providing me with that much needed push to ask myself today ‘what do I have that I can give to people?“.

As I ask myself this question, a lot of possibilities come to mind like volunteering at a local charity, going to the senior center and just spending time with one of them and bringing smiles to their faces. But many people shy away from volunteering because it takes time, and many times a lot of us start having doubts as to where the money is going, and how it is being spent. Well, there are numerous ways to help others and bring a little joy.

Here is a beautiful inspirational site where you can find how others are spreading joy and bringing smiles in someone else’s life. I loved reading some of the ideas here!

HelpOthers

The site lists some kindness ideas to think about:

Service: donate to a cause, as a holiday gift for your best friend.
Affection: be generous with hugs, kisses and pats on the back.
Laughter: clip cartoons, share funny stories.
Written note: send a ‘thank you’ note, write a letter to an old friend.
Compliment: a simple ‘you look great today’, a sincere ‘thank you for a wonderful meal’.
Listening: no interrupting, no daydreaming, no responding, just listening.
Solitude: spend some time in silence, help others spend some time in silence.

And as I spent some time thinking about other people’s acts of kindness towards me, I can’t forget how helpful and full of compassion some of the hospital nurses were when my mother had triple bypass surgery. There were times when the whole family would be down with overwhelming feelings helplessness and the nursing staff’s caring and compassion would keep our hopes alive. So, I have decided to go to the local hospital this weekend and bring flowers to some of the patients as well as the nursing staff, anonymously.

And I hope I can make it a regular zen habit!

How about you? Do you feel you have something that you can share with others and make them feel happier? How do you plan on paying kind acts forward?

Do you have any idea what you’ve been giving me in the past 3-4 weeks? You make a difference and you are too modest to see it!

Oh Mig, I knew you’d always come to my rescue….. look there were no comments here

thanks for always being there :)

What a fantastic idea to do the anonymous flowers at the hospital for both the patients and the nursing staff. I’m working on doing something a little smaller scale at the moment but I’ll share with you. I have some neighbors who are an elderly couple and he recently had a slight stroke. His already bad eyesight is now almost gone and I know he loved to read. So I know he can get some books at the library on tape but I thought I’d buy him a large print version of a book and also read it out loud and tape it for him as I do so. That way he can feel like he is reading the way he used to (and follow along if he can in the physical book, or just ignore the book and listen to the tape – give him the flexibility and the choice)and also get a more recent book than he could from our library without a long wait.

Thats a superb idea teeni! Come to think of it, what you are doing is much more large scale than what I am doing :) theres a lot of effort you are planning to put in and I am sure, you’ll get back in exponentials! the satisfaction, his blessings…. that are irreplaceable ! Kudos to you :)

may be you should write about it and link to Leo’s blog….. just an idea, Im sure he would love to hear from more bloggers who are already doing it!

Deborah

Great food for thought Pearl. And as Mig says in so many words, thanks for what you’ve been giving me, your friendship :-)

pearl

Aww Deborah…… you gals are really something….. you are all the reason for my success you know? I mean it from the bottom of my heart…

Sueblimely

I value what you have been giving to me through your blogging. Not only such wonderful posts as this but as someone who encourages and validates me. That is a precious gift. Thank you.

Life does get too busy and it is so easy to ignore our individual power to do some good in this world – even sitting at our computer. Thank you for the reminder – I am now off to do some clicking to donate at care2.com and a Christmas donation somewhere.

pearl

Gosh, Sue, You are such an angel! :) thank you for being so supportive…

care2.com is a such a cool site with just about every organization listed on there… good move Sue….

Pearl, I’m so happy to have discovered your site, thanks to the blog carnival! Thanks to “cyber space”, one of the ways I practice random acts of kindness, is to “social bookmark” other people’s sites & leave supportive comments. I’ve wondered to myself if this is, in fact, an act of kindness?? When I look at my intent & the time I’m freely giving to do this, I would say yes. What are your thoughts on this?

pearl

Hey Cathy.. welcome! and thanks!

of course giving other people your time is an act of kindness, you are also helping to send them traffic

BUT there is also a hidden motive in doing so, we may not say it or admit it, I think there is an unwritten expectation on our part that may be someone else will also do that for us! meaning, stumble our article or come back to comment! don’t you think? :)

paying it forward concept and its examples as given in the website I give the link above talks of such things as mowing someone’s lawn or paying toll for the guy behind you or what teeni (above) did for her neighbor – something that helps her neighbor but she is not expecting anything in return … IMHO
