Domain Name, Transfer to WordPress or not!

I have a lot of topics I would like to talk about.. but somehow, just like many bloggers who would like to post more, cannot find the time to put it all together! In the meantime, I will say some things that I have been thinking about and doing!

I was looking for some cool blog publishing applications and read somewhere that with windows live, you can see exactly how the post would look on your page, without first publishing it! So, yesterday I downloaded Windows Live to see how the application works! During configuration, it asks you to provide it with your blog’s user id and password so your blog can be configured with windows live! Once the blog was configured with it, everything looked pretty good..

During the configuration process, a message popped up that the software publishes a test post to the blog which gets automatically deleted immediately! But when I went to the blog, this weird test post was still up! So hope a few of my subscribers that are out there, don’t think I am going nuts and posting things that don’t really make sense!! Of course, I deleted the test post right away!

Until I find some time in making my articles readable, I did want to say something very important that is on my mind! I see in the mybloglog widget in the right sidebar a lot of new faces each day! But most of you are going away without saying a hi or bye :) I wish there was a widget that I could display to welcome you all but since that isn’t there, let me say that

And, I want to ask whoever lands up here to please not be shy and say a simple ‘Hi’ and please take a few seconds to tell me what you think of this blog….

Do you think I should move to wordpress? Or keep spending time in editing blogger?

Is it even worth spending time on blogger modifications? I was kind of wishing (positive thinking) that may be one day I will wake up and see that Google really decided to make blogger look and feel better and easier than wordpress! Do you think its wishing too much?

In the mean time, I am looking into a good domain name! Knowing that the url is Fresh-Perspectives.blogspot.com and the name of the blog is Interesting Observations, I’d like to hear suggestions on what my domain name should be! Fresh-Perspectives.com is NOT available!

I need ideas and advice! I saw kumiko has moved over to wordpress, but she says she spent more than 17 hours to complete the transfer and other things! Now I understand she probably had much more information and data to transfer over, and I may not have to spend those many hours.. but I am double minded about it!

But I would love to hear what it took you to transfer over to wordpress, if you did.

Blogger won’t show my URL because I don’t have a blogger blog, if that makes any sense. My website is http://www.untwistedvortex.com/ – take a look if you’re so inclined.

A lot of SEO preaches the .com mantra, but it really isn’t so if the .com version isn’t a blog. People tend to click on links and bookmarks, not type in .com anyway. The choice is always yours, these are just my slightly experienced thoughts on it (I used a .net domain for 5 years).

I have toyed with the idea of word press just for the creativity of it.But then blogger is free and I guess I would be in the optimistic camp where I think that that google will be getting better.

Why would you want the change? For your own domain name?

I agree with you point thoroughly though! and of course i won’t argue with your experience ;) I will buy the domain before the weekend is over regardless :) and then decide whatever happens!

Hi Jenny – I want to stay optimistic too ;) but for some reason I am feeling the pressure of moving – guess you nailed it – more creativity with wordpress?!? I don’t know! but the domain name I am definitely getting this weekend.. I am getting more and more votes for wordpress even though Blogger is free, so I am really in a huge dilemma here on what to do! :(

:) I host 3 blogs that are mine or my families on my own hosting and use standalone WordPress.
To Simonne’s comment about the weird permalinks, with long numbers, that is editable in the WordPress setup, just change from the default to the new date and name option in the general setup and WordPress will re-write those for you.
(You may have to add a Post Plug to the posts, but that’s doable, and WordPress, will modify your posts on the fly)

You also need access to your .htaccess file to do this automatically but your hosting provider should be able to help.

Some of your links are already kicking to fresh-perspectives.net and it gets a parked domain on Go-daddy, so I guess you may have already started the process.

If you haven’t chosen a host, I would highly recommend someone with Direct Admin or C-Panel, those both include automatic installers that make the WordPress installation a Snap!. . . Literally 3 minutes to install the blog software, then your ready to start finding your template, making the modifications and importing from blogger.

I am really pressed for time too so for the next few weeks Im thinking I’ll keep it at blogger but will be looking for a good host! yes I do see some of the links already going to the new domain and that somehow started making me a bit nervous :D but anyway, thanks for the offer, i might email you!! come back again :) tc

Hey Pearl – thanks for stopping by my site and being THE FIRST to post a comment…wow, I feel like we’re family! I would mostly echo what glenn scott said, and it sounds like, as I write this you’ve already made the decision so congrats on that. I think you’ll find WP to be a better outlet for your obvious creativity. I still have a personal blog on Blogger which I’m sure I’ll keep there, but for trying to get more polished results I do feel I made the right choice coming to WP…oh and I use BlueHost in case you’re looking at hosting options…so far so good.

I totally recommend the transfer to WordPress on your own domain. I wrote about it on Upper Fort Stewart if you’d like to get my experience. Long story short: much better all around.

Oh, and there’s also a WordPress plugin called “What Would Seth Godin Do?” that you can use to welcome new visitors to your blog. How’s that for incentive?
