Off with PerformancingAds, On with ScratchBack

These two very different systems may not be comparable but as I was taking one off and putting the other one on, thought this was a great title for this post.  I had signed up with PerformancingAds when there was so much hype about them and just about everyone was jumping on the bandwagon but soon after that I started feeling it was not really doing what we all expected from them.  I just didn’t have the time to remove their code at the time but today finding Michael Jackson on my blog did it.   There are a few things that kind of bothered me about this ad.  1) the blog this ad belonged to did not fit with this blog’s categories or theme 2) I didn’t approve this ad, performancingads crew did, which somehow doesn’t make sense to me.  But in any case,

I logged into their site and thought of removing my site from the system as I thought I didn’t really understand how it worked but upon hitting the delete button, I was taken to the following screen that says that I can’t delete the site since it contains an advertisement that has been payed (PAID) for.

Well, I found that interesting as I hadn’t been writing anything in the last couple of weeks and someone still found my blog worth buying an ad on!   But the reports screen revealed a different story, that a booking was made on my blog but I wasn’t getting paid for it.

Of course, this is not the first time it has happened, in the past also there were a few ads that appeared on this blog but I never got paid for them.   It’s crazy that some ads appeared on my blog for a week or two, for free!

So, today I decided to remove PerformancingAds code and instead stay with much reliable Scratchback, the Fancy Tip Jar!   ScratchBack is a way for the readers to say thank you to the content producers by giving them a small tip and in return gain a link back to their site and get exposure.  Simple and Brilliant!  So go ahead, tip me and get in my list of links.

So, here’s the question.  Have you used PerformancingAds and has the system worked for you?  If you use another ad-network for buying/selling square ads, which one and how is it different from PerformancingAds, good/bad..  your opinion matters!

I myself never had much luck with PerformancingAds although I don’t know if I gave it a fair try. I just wasn’t that crazy about it and decided to go back.

I haven’t used Performancing Ads, but I have have good experiences with BuySellAds. I’ve been using them on two sites and recently started using them on my primary blog as well. Their system is easy to use as a publisher or an advertiser and they provide good support if needed… And best of all, I haven’t had any Michael Jackson ads on any of my sites.

@John.. I don’t know many of them who tried them but from amongst the ones I know, didn’t seem to have much luck either

@Steven: I remember signing up with BuySellAds a while ago but never heard from them so completely forgot about them. Just checked now after seeing your comment but they are still in beta and haven’t activated my account! I’d be trying them when they do.. thanks for stopping by

strange. you can’t delete because a paid ad is posted, but then the ad wasn’t actually paid for?

that scratchback looks promising. :) will look into it.

Hi Kouji.. yes, ScratchBack is a great concept for the readers as well as the content producer so I guess I’ll keep that widget! I’m not sure who got paid with that ad, but it was not me :)

That’s downright rude. So they probably have a cutoff where under a certain amount, they just keep it all or something.
I think if you aren’t getting paid, you should be under no obligation whatsoever.

Hi Tim.. may be so.. I just don’t know how their system works and I’m not the first person to have experienced this, there are many who have pointed out the flaws.. read the post Mig wrote a while ago http://www.ewriting.pamil-visions.com/2008/09/08/performancingads/ And they haven’t done anything about it since!

still thinking about scratchback. i wonder though how much of a cut they’ll receive once the beta is over. right now, i think, they get 10% of what’s left over from paypal. would you still use it if that went up to 30%?

kouji – i don’t have a clue on ScratchBack’s next plans, so only time will tell if I’ll stay or leave but for the time being, it’s pretty good. Click on one of the links on the widget if you decide to try it :)

nice to hear about a first hand experience with performancingads, heard a lot about it but, i found nothing like what you went through… i guess it doesn’t live up to the hype it’s getting…
