Interesting Observations

blogging, social media and self-improvement!

Domain Name, Transfer to WordPress or not!

I have a lot of topics I would like to talk about.. but somehow, just like many bloggers who would like to post more, cannot find the time to put it all together! In the meantime, I will say some things that I have been thinking about and doing!

I was looking for some cool blog publishing applications and read somewhere that with windows live, you can see exactly how the post would look on your page, without first publishing it! So, yesterday I downloaded Windows Live to see how the application works! During configuration, it asks you to provide it with your blog’s user id and password so your blog can be configured with windows live! Once the blog was configured with it, everything looked pretty good..

During the configuration process, a message popped up that the software publishes a test post to the blog which gets automatically deleted immediately! But when I went to the blog, this weird test post was still up! So hope a few of my subscribers that are out there, don’t think I am going nuts and posting things that don’t really make sense!! Of course, I deleted the test post right away!

Until I find some time in making my articles readable, I did want to say something very important that is on my mind! I see in the mybloglog widget in the right sidebar a lot of new faces each day! But most of you are going away without saying a hi or bye :) I wish there was a widget that I could display to welcome you all but since that isn’t there, let me say that

I welcome you all on my blog..

And, I want to ask whoever lands up here to please not be shy and say a simple ‘Hi’ and please take a few seconds to tell me what you think of this blog….

Do you think I should move to wordpress? Or keep spending time in editing blogger?

Is it even worth spending time on blogger modifications? I was kind of wishing (positive thinking) that may be one day I will wake up and see that Google really decided to make blogger look and feel better and easier than wordpress! Do you think its wishing too much?

In the mean time, I am looking into a good domain name! Knowing that the url is Fresh-Perspectives.blogspot.com and the name of the blog is Interesting Observations, I’d like to hear suggestions on what my domain name should be! Fresh-Perspectives.com is NOT available!

I need ideas and advice! I saw kumiko has moved over to wordpress, but she says she spent more than 17 hours to complete the transfer and other things! Now I understand she probably had much more information and data to transfer over, and I may not have to spend those many hours.. but I am double minded about it!

But I would love to hear what it took you to transfer over to wordpress, if you did.

I moved to WordPress from Blogger and it took me less than one hour. WordPress has the option of importing posts from Blogger. What it does wrong: all the permalinks will be some long numbers, so you’ll have to edit them by hand, in case you wish to do so for SEO reasons – I have chosen not to change them.

Hi Simonne – does it also import all the comments? less than an hour doesn’t sound too bad.. I do worry when I read people say all night or 17 hours! that sounds insane amount of time to me!

I recently looked at moving to wordpress, blogged about it today actually. It seems to cost a lot of money for stuff blogger does for free.

Yes, blogger templates are not very pretty but there are some out there.. I just found a site with a few nice ones but there’s a lot of sites out there.. http://www.bloggertemplates.org/

I’ve made the decision for my blog that I’m not doing it. It just doesn’t make sense to me to pay for something which you can have for free. :) I suggest create one and fully check it out before making the decision..

Hi snoskred: I hear ya… thats what I am starting to do actively now! research! I realize the cost involved, but I am thinking of this in the long run! Or may be I’ll stay right here, who knows!

I hear so much abt wordpress though, its hard not to want to do something about it..:)

I am going to look at the site you recommended.. thank you so much..

PS: btw.. your aussie community won’t allow me in being that I’m not from there ;) I thot it would’ve been nice to get to know more people from there :)

I have a blogger blog and a wordpress blog. The blogger blog is so easy to take care of. The WordPress blog takes more work.

I own the URL that makes up my blogger name so I may move it one day.

I think people give more relevance to self hosted blogs on other software.

If you think you might need to move eventually you might want to do it now, the longer you wait the bigger your blog gets.

Everyone is moving to WordPress from other blogs because WordPress is easier. WordPress also has the option of transferring blogger files to WordPress format. Anyways good luck.

I’ve been doing a self-hosted WordPress blog since the beginning over a year ago. Getting a domain name and reliable hosting can be very cheap (less that $50 USD in some cases). If you don’t mind setting it up the first time, you’ll be much happier doing it that way. As for domain names, don’t limit yourself to a .com suffix. You can also use .net as well as your country code. Your domain name should be the same as what your blog name is going to be. You can use the domain with or without a dash connecting the words for even more options.

Hi Joey: I am thinking that too that if I have to move eventually, why not now! I also don’t have the domain yet, which is a decision I need to make in a day or two..:) thank u :)

thank you desi baba ;) yes, thats the intent but see what snoskred is saying here :) so I get double minded easily ;) but easy is what I am looking for .. thanks for stopping by!! tc and kit

hey rt: I couldn’t see your site.. no link there! you are so right not limiting to .com, but i was reading some SEO blog the other day that talks about .com being the most that people want to type so if you have a .net and your competitor has a .com, you are surely losing traffic that easily :) so I’m not sure which one to go for, im still learning..!!
